For equines diagnosed with, or having suspected, EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome), we need to fulfil their daily sodium and chloride requirement with care; as feeding 'straight salt' has been proven to aggravate ulcers and hinder their healing process, as it can irritate the delicate stomach lining.  (Marlin, 2025)

Instead of feeding 'straight salt' (ie., table salt, Himalayan salt, iodised salt, etc) or electrolytes, to balance the ration, it is, beneficial to supply NaCl (Sodium Chloride) that is kind and gentle on the equine's stomach.  To achieve this, new 'Gastri-Kind salt' has been formulated; ensuring that the individual grains of salt are coated with an oil.   When bound in association with this oil, the encapsulated salt is not metabolised in the equine stomach, instead it travels safely to the small intestine, and is metabolised there, without causing any disruption to the compromised health of the stomach lining. 

Why Supplement with Gastri-Kind Salt? 

Sodium Chloride (NaCl) (salt)  is an essential nutrient for horses because their diet is low in sodium and they lose NaCl in sweat. (Pub Med., 2024).  Both Sodium (Na) and Chloride (Cl) are essential in the correct levels in the equine body, as they maintain adequate cellular pH, and control muscle contraction and nerve function.  A deficiency in the body, can result in a decreased appetite, reduced water consumption and dehydration, leading in turn, to weight loss, fatigue and lethargy.  

Equines that work hard or sweat a lot, can suffer from sodium and chloride deficiencies very easily.
